A Simple Headband/Ear-Warmer (Flat Knitting Version)

I've had several people ask for it ... so here's the flat knitting version of my Simple Headband/Ear-Warmer pattern. I haven't personally tested this version, so please please please let me know if I made any mistakes while writing the pattern!

(Shown here with the garter rows left out.)

Materials:

• Worsted Weight Yarn (Hobby Lobby’s “I Love This Yarn” in Red)
• Size 8US Knitting Needles
• Stitch Marker

Abbreviations:

• K: knit
• P: purl
• Sts: stitches

Gauge:

4 sts = 1 inch in Stockinette Stitch

Sizes:

Child or Adult

Notes:

The flower shown is crocheted. Any knit/crocheted flower, or practically any other embellishment, would look good too. And if you’re not into embellishments it looks great just on its own as well!

For a Child:

Cast on 84 sts.

Row 1-5: *K2, P2* repeat to end

Row 6: Knit across
Row 7: Purl across
Row 8: Knit across
Row 9: Purl across

Row 10-14: Knit across

Row 15: Purl across
Row 16: Knit across
Row 17: Purl across
Row 18: Knit across

Row 19-23: *K2, P2* repeat to end

Bind off loosely. (If you bind off tightly there will not be enough stretch.)
Using a tapestry needle, join the ends of the headband to form a circle.
Weave in ends.

For an Adult:

Cast on 92 sts.

Row 1-6: *K2, P2* repeat to end

Row 7: Purl across
Row 8: Knit across
Row 9: Purl across
Row 10: Knit across
Row 11: Purl across

Row 12-17: Knit across

Row 18: Purl across
Row 19: Knit across
Row 20: Purl across
Row 21: Knit across
Row 22: Purl across

Row 23-28: *K2, P2* repeat to end

Bind off loosely. (If you bind off tightly there will not be enough stretch.)
Using a tapestry needle, join the ends of the headband to form a circle.
Weave in ends.

  1. Hi, thanks for the pattern! I just finished it and it is beautiful! I was wondering if in the pattern for the flat version you meant to say to K2, P2 for all the rows instead of saying K2, P2 and then P2, K2? I tried it the way you wrote it for the first couple of rows but the ribbing didn't come through. Any thoughts?

  2. You are right, it should be K2, P2 every row. I'll change it. Thanks!

  3. I just finished making this pattern. I used a size 8 needle and worsted weight yarn as recommended, I found this pattern to be very large (or maybe I have a large head?). It also curled up and was not ribbed like the picture shows. I think perhaps the pattern should be
Row 1-6 *K1 P1* repeat to end and Rows 20-27 *K1 P1* repeat to end.

I am going to try it again with the pattern changes and leaving off the garter stitch like the picture does. I also think I am going to decrease the amount of stitches to make it smaller. I guess I will have to give the first one to someone with a bigger head!

  4. oops maybe I have a *small* head....

  5. Check your gauge. I may have a tighter gauge than you have. Or you might be right and you just might have a small head. ;-)

  7. Devin: i cant reach your email so i 'm posting. I've made a number of headbands and now friends and others all want them. So cute! I want to charge them a minimal amount to cover the yarn at least. YOu dont have the usual disclaimer on your pattern i.e. "for person use only". But i feel weird doing this w/o asking. can you respond?

  8. Feel free! I made them free patterns for a reason. :-)
The only thing that would bother me is if someone were to take my pattern (the physical pattern, not items made from it) and try to sell it as their own. The finished products made from the pattern are yours to do with as you please. :-)

  10. I'm a bit confused. I'd like to make this pattern but should I follow the posted pattern or do changes still need to be made to it. In December or 2012 you said you fixed it but unsure if the pattern I see has been? It was posted Nov 2012. I don't want to have to start over again if I don't have to. Thank you!!!

  11. The pattern is correct as written. If you'd like a tighter rib you can do "k1, p1" around like a previous commenter was wondering, but if you would like it to look like the picture you should stick with "k2, p2" as written in the pattern.

  12. I'm exceptionally new to knitting, and I found this pattern easy to follow and it makes a lovely headband. Having dreadlocks means I struggle to find hats that fit me properly, so I love woolly headbands. The pattern made one that fit over my head and ears perfectly and will definitely fit my giganta-head. :P Thanks for making this!

  13. i loved this pattern i knitted it with the garter rows in and i went to the pattern u did for the in the round headband to get a pattern for a flower as i do not know a thing about crocheting. so i used miss crafty fingers pattern (but i didnt like how the flower looked) so i took out the sixth petal and made them a bit shorter than they called for and made a flower much to my liking. thank you for sharing this pattern with us all

  15. Super pattern, thank you, one little point, I think you will find on the adult flat version the all knit rows should be 12-16 not 12-17?

  16. Thanks for the pattern. I made it for neighbors daughter for her birthday, i think stitches for kids is big cause it came out big. Think i'll just give it to her mum instead as a Christmas present..

  17. It just depends on your gauge -- that's why it's so important to knit a swatch before working on a pattern. Your gauge must be bigger than mine is.

  18. Is the rose knitted? I would like that pattern also. Thank you.

  19. What are you suppose to do for row 17? First it says to knit the row and then its says to pearl it.

  20. The one I used is a crochet pattern and unfortunately is unavailable right now as the Etsy shop owner is on vacation.

If you crochet you can try one of these instead:
    • Rosa Flower (you’ll need a Ravelry account for this one, and it’s $3.99): http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/rosa-flower
    • Irish Rose: http://www.lionbrand.com/faq/492.html
    • I don’t know what this one is called but it’s free and the English version is at the bottom: http://boomieboomie.blogspot.com/2011/11/een-sjaal-met-een-bloem-en-een.html
    • This one isn’t a rosette but is still really pretty and free: http://mycrochetstuff.blogspot.com/2011/08/crochet-flower-accent-free-pattern.html

Or if you only knit, you can try any of these:

  21. I'm not sure how I did it but knitting 12-17 I ended up with 3 Rows of purl stitch on the "right side" of the band and if I continue on with the pattern I will have the purl side facing out. How did I mess it up and how can I fix it?

  23. I made two yesterday, the first one I made as per the pattern, the second one was better because I used a smaller needle for the rib on both sides, my daughter and granddaughter were both thrilled with the results, thank you for the pattern
